RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages down to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
