Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
